Ecological Consultant
Papillon is an Ecological Consultant and works across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and beyond to advise on garden biodiversity. We promote the natural environment by recycling where possible and encouraging others to build their garden to help, not hinder, nature.
Working with Land Managers, Government Bodies, and Homeowners, our services include:
Ecological Impact Assessment or (EIA)|
An EIA habitat appraisal helps landowners assess the impact of flora and fauna on the environment. Where there are concerns, an EIA will offer recommendations to offset these potential impacts through habitat or hibernacula creation.
Habitat Assessments
National Vegetation Classification or (NVC) is a survey method used to identify the community of plants in a habitat and likely associations. Papillon conducts these surveys to help land-owners plan ahead and determine the best possible vegetation to encourage and grow in the environment.
Hibernacula creation
A hibernacula is a place in which a creature seeks refuge, such as a bear using a cave to overwinter. The word can be used to describe a variety of shelters used by many kinds of animals, including insects, toads, lizards, snakes, bats or rodents. Perfect for clients who have a favourite garden visiting species and wants to create a year-round home for it in their gardens, e.g. luxury hedgehog condo.
Habitat Creation
If you have a favourite animal or insect, such as hedgehogs, birds, or bumble bees, then creating a home or an attraction for them in your garden will help them stay. We offer advice to how to encourage a whole range of species into the garden, and can help create the perfect habitat for them. Nature can bring lots of joy into the garden and even help to keep vegetation at bay. It's great for kids too, to see and appreciate all sorts of animals and insects, such as hedgerows, ladybirds, lizards, sloe worms or spiders.
Pollinator Planting
Who doesn’t love a wildflower meadow? Or perhaps you want more formal wildflower borders. Wildflower meadow help to attract all sorts of insects and animals and are very pretty to look at too. Papillon can help you to sow or plant the right types of wildflower for the environment to promote healthy growth.
Environmental consultancy
Our environmental consultancy services will help you to put your plans into action, whilst respecting the environment and adhering to the law. We can help you to create and implement environmental policies for a range projects, such as rediverting flows of waterways, canalisation of waterways, silt trapping, and the requirements of environmental interventions such as Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). We can also advise on where to seek funding from for such developments.
Vegetable gardens and community growing spaces
If you are interested in growing your own vegetables, then Papillon can help you plan and build a vegetable garden to give it the best possible chance of survival. We also offer advice to business owners who wish to give back to their local community, through provisions of community growing spaces, which in turn help disadvantaged individuals learn new skills and gain enjoyment through growing vegetables.
Herb Gardens
Herb gardens are fantastically aromatic spaces which are ideal for those who love to produce their own culinary herbs, or even herbal remedies, made from organically grown herbs. Let us help you design and build your own herb garden for optimum results.
Rewilding or Ecological Restoration Projects
Ecological restoration projects are great for those who long a wilder landscape. Normally viewed as messy gardening, these mosaic habitats provide unrivalled richness for a diverse range of species which require less disturbed and more wild land.
Companion Planting
Provide the best possible chance for your favoured plant species, by finding them friends to grow with. This is ideal for growing spaces and we can help you find suitable companion plants, as well as instal them.
Riparian Woodland Creation
Riparian woodland creates a more diverse and natural environment for land with rivers or streams. Provisions of this type of habitat is becoming more vital for Scotland’s aquatic species due to warming sea temperatures. River-dwelling species require cool waters to survive and thrive, so the more shade over Scotland’s waterways, the better. Papillon helps design and build riparian woodland that is appropriate for its surroundings.
